Carlos Garaicoa
(b. Havana, 1967)
Carlos Garaicoa graduated from the Superior Institute of Art in Havana in 1994. His first solo exhibition, Días de infancia (Childhood Days), was held in 1989. However, it wasn’t until he and sculptor Esterio Segura curated the exhibition Metáforas del Templo (Metaphors of the Temple) in 1993 that he became a full-fledged member of the Cuban art world. Garaicoa’s practice incorporates photography, drawing, prints, video, public interventions and performance. Some of his most significant solo exhibitions include El sueño de la razón (The Dream of Reason) at the Wifredo Lam Center for Contemporary Art in Havana, 1994; El voluble rostro de la realidad (The Fickle Face of Reality) at the Center for the Development of Visual Arts in Havana, 1996; Carta a los censores (Letter to the Censors), 39th International Contemporary Art Prize, at Princess Grace Theater in Monaco, 2005; Capablanca's Real Passion, at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, California, 2005; The drawing, the writing, the abstraction, at Lombard Freid Gallery in New York, 2006; Postcapital, at Palacio de la Virreina in Barcelona, Spain, 2006; and La enmienda que hay en mí (The Amendment In Me) at the National Museum of Fine Arts in Havana, 2009. His work has been widely featured in group exhibitions, including the fourth and fifth editions of the Havana Biennial in 1994 and 1996; Más allá del documento (Beyond the Document) at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid, 2000; the Sao Paulo Biennial; the First International Biennial of Johannesburg, South Africa; ARCO in Spain; and Documenta 11 in Kassel, Germany, 2002.
