Jorge Wellesley
(b. Havana, 1979)
Jorge Wellesley graduated from the San Alejandro School of Fine Arts (1998) and the Superior Institute of Art (2004), both in Havana. During his time at ISA, he was a member of Departamento de Intervenciones Públicas “DIP” (Department of Public Interventions). In 2006 he received the First Award at the City Salon in Havana, granted by the Center for the Development of Visual Arts, and in 2008 was awarded a Batiscafo residency, granted by the Triangle Art Trust and Gasworks of England, in Havana. From 2007 through 2012 he was a Professor of Painting at the Superior Institute of Art. His solo exhibitions and intervention include Surface at Villa Manuela Gallery in Havana, 20013; TRUTH 0043: Word at La Casona Gallery in Havana, 2009; TRUTH 0028: The Weight of the Idea I, a performance-tour around the city of Havana, 2006; and TRUTH: reality and language II, Provincial Center for Visual Arts and Design in Havana, 2005. As a member of DIP, he participated in projects such as Action Experience: 30 days, during the 8th Havana Biennial (2003); The Possible Date (2003); Bondage exercise No.1. Casting (2003); Challenge (2002); Eight more hours (2002); The drama of becoming another one: Paranoia (2002); and Air Space (2001). His work is part of the collections of the National Museum of Fine Arts in Havana; Casa Lamm in Mexico City, Mexico; the National Council of Visual Arts in Havana; as well as several private collections in Cuba, the United States, Mexico and Spain.
