José Ángel Vincench
(b. Holguín, 1973)
José Ángel Vincench graduated from the Visual Arts Elementary School in Holguín in 1988, from the Holguín Provincial School of Arts in 1992, and from the Superior Institute of Art in Havana in 1997. Some of his most recent solo exhibitions are Light and Darkness (Havana Gallery, Zurich, Switzerland, 2011); What I Can Tell You (23 y 12 Art Center, Havana, Cuba, 2007); Head Praying (Iberoamerican House, Holguin, Cuba, 2007); Behind the Abstract (Axis Contemporary Art, Calgary, Canada, 2007); Magic Realities (Havana Gallery, Zurich, Switzerland, 2006); One Thing Leads to Another (Habana Gallery, Havana, Cuba, 2003); and It Is Not the Same and It Is Not Equal (Habana Gallery, Havana, Cuba, 2000). He received an Honorary Mention at the 5th Drawing Salon in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, in 1998; the First Prize of the City Salon, Havana, Cuba, in 1994; and the Second Prize of the 1st Salon of Contemporary Cuban Art, Havana, Cuba, in 1995. He has been Artist in Residence of the APT Studios (London, United Kingdom, 1999), the Fordsburg Artists’ Studios (Johannesburg, South Africa, 1999), and the Cuban Artists Fund (New York, USA, 2004). His works are part of the collections of the National Museum of Fine Arts in Havana, Cuba; the Berini Gallery in Madrid, Spain; the Van der Voort Gallery in Ibiza, Spain; the MAM Gallery in Douala, Cameroon; the Bourbon-Lally Gallery in New York, USA; the Cadaques2 Gallery in Barcelona, Spain; the Axis Contemporary Art in Calgary, Canada, in addition to numerous private collections worldwide.
